Through Fundamental Interdisciplinary Insights into Molecular Surface reaction to Heterogeneous Catalysis, Thin Film and Nanomaterial Design, and Cancer Treatment

Speaker : Tamerlan Magkoev, Head of Nanophysics and Nanotechnology Research Center, University of North Ossetia, Vladikavkaz, Russian Federation

Place : Department of Physics Seminar Room

The presentation covers some very recent and ongoing case studies of Nanophysics and Nanotechnology Research Center of the University of North Ossetia, Russia. The main focus is to understand what is the very basic physics and chemistry of molecular adsorption and reaction on surfaces, constituting a background of all corresponding application and technological strategies. For this purpose a number of Surface Science techniques is used to study a set of in-situ (UHV) prepared thin films and nanostructures: CO, O2, CO2/Au/TiO2, La, Gd, B/Mo(110), 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride, metal phthalocyanines. Despite of the variety of the materials studied they, nevertheless, constitute a set of complimentary systems allowing achieving an ultimate goal of understanding the main mechanisms of molecular surface interactions. Such detail atomic and molecular level studies allow, for instance, prediction and design of new highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts, thermionic emitters, photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy of cancer.
